A Salmon’s GPS

I know pigeons use the Earth’s magnetic field to hone in on their open abodes beyond the blue yonder, but what I find hard to grasp [although it is undeniably true] is how a little fish goes from being born in a small lake 900 miles inland, then swims out into the ocean/s [switching from fresh to salt water] for a few years, only to go back [all the way] to that little pond [switching from salt to fresh water this time] with what kind of guidance or memory? The only things I remember [when I was a child, mind you – not even a baby] lurk around the age of three…
